Milking cows & cheese making

A short walk from your casita to the higher part of our property will bring you to our Corral. It is here that we milk our cows twice a day. You are welcome to help us! We make cheese on a regular basis, come and give it a try and then eat it for breakfast! Cost: Complimentary for guests

Tenorio Trail

Explore our property on our private trails. You will pass through remnant rainforest and also be able to visit a look out with spectacular view of Volcano Miravalles and Volcano Tenorio. It’s not uncommon to see monkeys and sloths in the trees.

Bird watching

Casitas Tenorio is a paradise for birdwatchers! We have many varieties of hummingbirds and other birds that live onsite. It’s not hard to spot toucans, Montezuma Oropendolas and a myriad of hummingbird species. Please see out bird watching page for more details.

Volunteer

Volunteering is an excellent way to experience Costa Rican culture and get to know more about our local environment, our farming practices local families, and the local community. You’ll also have the opportunity to improve your Spanish.

Bijagua Waterfall Hike

Visit this family run lodge and explore their trail into the rainforest at the base of Miravalles volcano. You will pass through their gardens and then alongside a river through dense forest. Two river crossings are required to reach the waterfalls and the hike can be strenuous is parts.

Hanging Bridges at Heliconias Lodge

Heliconias lodge is located about 800m from Casitas Tenorio. This is a community run lodge with an incredible trail through the rainforest of about 2.2km. There are three hanging bridges along the trails where you can get specular views on the rainforests. You can do the trail yourself, or take a local guide.

The forest provides home to a wide range of flora and fauna including numerous illusive bird species such as the tody mot mot, rufous vented ground cuckoo, white hawk and ant-trushes and endemic plant species such as the ‘jicaro danto’.

Rio Celeste

Rio Celeste is located in the Volcano Tenorio national park is about 11km from Casitas Tenorio. The trail is about 7km in total and includes an impressive waterfall, blue lagoon, bubbling hot pools and the Teñideros” (or dye point) where the river takes its blue color from merging with a small creek.

Tubing on Rio Celeste

Enjoy a great ride down one of the most beautiful rivers in the world. The tour run by Onca Tours is great. You ride in a tube across rapids and past beautiful rainforest. The water temperature is lovely.

Tapir Valley Private Reserve

Tapir Valley is an incredible private nature reserve that we own, near Rio Celeste. It has primary rainforest and wetland and is a nature lover and birdwatcher’s paradise. Contact us for your own private tour to this magnificent place.

Local Legends says “When God finished painting the sky, he washed his brushes in the river that now bears the name Rio Celeste.” Rio Celeste is a right blue river named after the color of its water caused by dissolved minerals at the confluence of two small rivers.

The park opens at 8am and entrance is not permitted after 2pm.

The colour of the river can change after high amounts of rainfall due to sediments carried in the river, however after several hours of dry weather the river’s colour can be restored to its remarkable blue colour.

Please note: Swimming in the river and hot springs is no longer permitted. You can swim in the river outside the park. Dive past the park entrance and you will pass a bridge that crosses Rio Celeste. You can park your car here and swim.

Laguna Danta Hike

A more challenging hike leaving from Heliconias Lodge to a crater lake on the slopes of Volcano Tenorio. This hike is difficult and must be completed with a guide from the Heliconias lodge.

Horse Riding

You can discover the local area via horseback. Tours can be tailored to your interests and riding ability. You can even take a horse ride to the Volcano Tenorio National Park.

Uncle Miguel’s Night Tour

Uncle Miguel has lived in Bijagua for many years. He has reforested his farm property to provide essential habitat for many species of frogs and reptiles you will have an opportunity to glimpse them in their natural environment.

You’ll need to contact Heliconias Lodge about the condition of the trial- we can also give them a call for you.

Activities beyond the local area and day trips

Caño Blanco kayak safari

Two wetlands combine to create an incredible place of natural beauty. Explore the area by kayak. You’ll have the opportunity to see many species of plants and animals. There will be chance to see the Caño Blanco’s unique freshwater mangroves, a place with an impressive scenic beauty.

Rafting on Rio Tenorio

The Rio Tenorio is a class III and IV river. It has many rapids and a class V 12ft drop. This is a great adventure activity and only about 30mins away from Casitas Tenorio.

Las Pumas wildlife refuge

Las Pumas is a private non-profit animal refuge providing an incredible, up-close experience with big cats native to Costa Rica, including jaguars, pumas, margays and ocelots.

Llanos de Cortez Waterfall

This waterfall is an incredible hidden treasure! It’s located about 4km off the Inter-Americana highway near the town of Bagaces. The entrance fee is a donation to the local school. There is a large car park and a short walk to the waterfall. It’s a great place to swim.

 

Palo Verde National Park

Palo Verde National park is about an hour drive from Casitas Tenorio. This wetland (formed by Tempisque River) provides a habitat for a plethora of bird and plant species and is home to many species of migratory birds and is a breeding ground of international importance and provides exceptional bird watching opportunities.

Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge

Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is a protected wetland of international significant about an 1.5hrs from Casitas Tenorio.  It provides one of the best locations for bird watching in all of Costa Rica. This mixed reserve comprises permanent and intermittent lakes, forested wetlands and flooded areas.

Palo Verde was declared a Ramsar Site in Costa 1991 and covers more than 43,000 acres and is home to 15 distinct habitats, from the mangrove to the bush and tropical dry forest. This aquatic haven attracts over 300 species of neotropical birds. Many trails allow visitors to discover this amazing national park a few attended. Boat tours can be arranged.

The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge was the first designated Ramsar Site in Costa Rica in 1991. Explore this protected wetland which one of the most important breeding grounds for many birds and animals species within Central America. Take a boat ride and enjoy spotting the wildlife along the river bank. It’s not hard to spot

crocodiles, caimans, turtles and iguanas. Cano Negro is also a prime fishing site for tarpon, guapote, alligator gar, drum and bass when in season. A license from the ranger station in Cano Negro village is required.

Rio Perdido

Rio Perdido is located on the other side of Volcano Miravalles from Bijagua. It is an impressive hotel and activity centre that offers a range of activities. There is a thermal river, natural hot springs, hiking trails, mountain bike trails, restaurant, hanging bridge and canopy tour. A day trip to Rio Perdido is highly recommended.

Las Hornillas

Las Hornillas is a place where you can walk on an volcanic crater of the Miravalles volcano! It is a 26,900 square feet crater with volcanic landscapes including fumaroles, boiling mud and hot springs. You can walk on a trail around the crater and then bath in the volcanic mud and then wash it off in the thermal water pools.

Floating on the Corobici

Floating down the Corobici River is peaceful adventure. It’s a great way to travel along the river and you will have many chances to see wildlife on this smooth journey.
